Five Steps on how to approach a beggar

April 25, 2010 | 00h05

The solidarity and love of neighbor are feelings that should be cultivated in our lives. Seeing the suffering of others is one way to look beyond our own problems and that creates a predisposition to act in an attempt to ease the pain of others.

Who perceives and is moved by the pain of a homeless person, will seek ways to surely help you in practical ways, not only with words and not just with the bread. It is important to remember, however, assumes that this helps to act with wisdom and prudence, as Jesus himself taught us.

Here are some tips that can help you in the exercise of charity directed to the homeless:

A. I can deal with a homeless person alone? When Jesus sent the disciples as recorded in Matthew verse 10, He sent two by two. It is unwise to approach alone and in the case of women, it would help to tell the company of a man.

Two. How to approach? The Bible says that God's love compels us, and without a doubt, our love and respect shown in education in a positive approach. There is a recipe for the approach. Rather. Be as natural as possible, as if talking to anyone else. Demonstrate interest, respect and affection and be sincere and true.

Three. What to say? Try to develop a relationship of friendship and trust. Never promise something you can not afford to comply. Many homeless people are frustrated by unfulfilled promises and false expectations cause grief and loss of confidence. Contact the plan of salvation, that Jesus loves you, has an interest in his life and get him off the street. Renew the hopes of that person and cite the example of an ex-beggar recovered. Pray with him keeping his eyes open, asking the Lord to bless, protect, and that he might be willing to get off the streets and accept help. If you know any home recovery of confidence in your city, enter it. If you do not know, try to find and return with the address.

4. How to call for the recovery program? Contact the possibility of recovery and, if the beggar interested, write the address of a halfway house in your city and delivered to him. You can also take you to the institution. However, the most appropriate way is to deliver the address, because if he really want to get off the streets, he will. If your city there is a house of reliable recovery, before sending it to another city, you better check if it actually has real interest in being admitted to hospital. You can verify this by checking schedules with him and watching his will and perseverance in this process for a period of 30 to 60 days. Before promising to send him to a halfway house, make sure there is a vacancy and if he has the profile of the public served by this entity. Again, the broken promises can lead to more frustration and distrust.

Five. And if he did not accept my help? There are homeless people that the SSS Program - Soup Soap and Salvation comes in contact for over 10 years. They get the soup, listen to the volunteers and even then does not accept any other kind of help. The important thing is never give up his life and make it clear that when he wants, the doors are open. We can not make choices for others, or force the other to change his life. When a family asks to hospitalize someone, our first question is whether the person really wants, it is willing to obey the orders of the house and their parents, if you are interested in changing lives. If the person does not want, should not be forced, because the Bible itself teaches that "every one shall give account of his own life."

The most important thing is not to be silent before the suffering of others and offer help, because doing so will fulfill our role as Christians, giving the opportunity for many people change their lives and find Jesus Christ. If you want to start a continuous work with the homeless population, suggest that the team do a training mission in life, where they will be treated other important details of the process approach, referral or treatment. This basic training is conducted annually and lasts three days, including accommodation and meals. Here, attached the flyer for the next seminar of Action and Worship.

And finally, pray for God to guide him, empower and give wisdom and perseverance in this work. May God bless and reward you for your willingness to serve.

In the precious love of Christ.
